Agnes Lawrence Pelton
American (born German), 1881-1961

Each of Pelton's paintings stands alone, as she never worked in series, though there are repeating themes that appear in many of her works. For example, the qualities of the desert that she so loved, its emptiness, the sense of space, the quality of the light, feature heavily in her abstractions, as do themes present in the teachings of Agni Yoga: stars as symbols of enlightenment and mountains that represent aspiration. Pelton painted solely for herself and had no interest in fame or fortune, and thus was virtually unknown during her lifetime. Today, her work gives us a very personal view into her psyche, into her world of fantasy and whimsy, but also her quiet solitude. Her work is playful and introspective, deeply symbolic, and it glows with light. How is your own inner life like Pelton's? Do you see yourself reflected in her paintings? Are you reminded of times when you too were quietly and happily alone with your thoughts?
