Emma Kunz

Swiss, 1892-1963

Kunz began her spiritual life at a much younger age than the other artists in this exhibition: at the age of eighteen she began using a pendulum to divine the future and the thoughts of those around her. She used what she gleaned from her pendulum to advise and heal others, a skill that many saw as nearly miraculous. Kunz, however, rejected this term, as she described herself as a researcher and believed that the powers she possessed were abilities that lay dormant in everyone. Her drawings were a record of knowledge and helped to open her mind to answers to the questions she sought answers to. These questions and answers were varied in nature; while many were spiritual, others had to do with the treatment or cause of an illness. For example, at times she used her drawings to heal the mental or physical ills of her patients and at others used them to decipher her own spiritual visions and prophesies.
